Ohio’s July Historical Events

On July 2, 1881 President James A. Garfield was shot in a railway station in Washington, DC. He later died that September.

On July 7, 1898 President William McKinley signed a revolution annexing Hawaii as a territory. It was 1959 before it became a state.

On July 13, 1787 Congress enacted the Northwest Ordinance that transformed territories into states in an area north of the Ohio River. They were considered equal to the original 13 colonies.

July 20, 1969 was the day Ohioan Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 flight.
